Eucalyptus Comes Down to One Number

There are hundreds of eucalyptus species and only a handful worth distilling, and the difference between them is measurable.

What people recognise as eucalyptus is really 1,8-cineole. A high-cineole oil smells clean, cool and penetrating; a low one smells vaguely medicinal and flat. Because the market rarely publishes the figure, a great deal of ordinary oil gets sold at the price of good oil.

We work with Eucalyptus globulus, the Tasmanian blue gum, buy the leaf in bulk from organic growers, distil it ourselves and have the cineole share measured by an outside laboratory. If you want the number, ask for it.

Mature Leaf, Not Juvenile Growth

Blue gum changes shape as it grows. Young trees carry broad, waxy, blue-tinged juvenile leaves; mature trees carry long, narrow, sickle-shaped ones. The two do not distil the same.

We use the mature foliage, which is where the cineole share is highest and most consistent.

The species is originally Tasmanian and now grows on hillsides from Australia to Portugal and China, which makes it one of the most widely planted aromatic trees in the world and one of the easiest to source carelessly.

Leaf To Still, Under Our Roof

Nothing comes to us in drums, so the species and the leaf maturity in the charge are choices we made rather than assurances we accepted.

Cut foliage is packed, steam is driven through it, and the oil separates as the vapour condenses. Eucalyptus is a generous yielder compared with a floral, which is exactly why it is often treated carelessly.

The run finishes when the leaf is spent. We do not quote an hour figure because we do not work to one.

Not For Small Children

There is no medical claim anywhere on this page. What we will say plainly is that high-cineole oils are not appropriate for babies and young children.

Bring it well down in a carrier before it touches skin, and trial a small area. Do not apply eucalyptus to or near the face of an infant or young child, and keep diffusion light in a room a small child sleeps in. Keep it away from the eyes.

This oil also ages faster than most. Buy the size you will actually use, store it cool and dark, and note the distillation date on the bottle rather than guessing.
